USGA plans to bring second headquarters to Pinehurst

Golfweek says

It’s official: USGA moving forward with plans to bring second headquarters to Pinehurst

By Julie Williams | September 9, 2020 10:02

The people have spoken: They want fewer U.S. Open sites visited more frequently, and they want them to be iconic. It’s one of the reasons the U.S. Golf Association is driving a permanent stake into the pine straw in Pinehurst, North Carolina.

The USGA confirmed the speculated move to Golfweek, citing several reasons why establishing an “HQ2” in the Village of Pinehurst served its mission of championing and advancing the game of golf.

Chief in the appeal of establishing roots in Pinehurst is the anchor site strategy. The idea that the USGA’s permanent presence there will allow the organization to bring the U.S. Open to Pinehurst more frequently is a major bonus.

“This idea that we’re going to come back here every five or six years for the next 25 years delivers on that clarity around where we’re going,” Craig Annis, Chief Brand Officer for the USGA, told Golfweek.

In announcing its anchor site strategy in a press conference on Wednesday morning, USGA CEO Mike Davis announced that the U.S. Open would be played at Pinehurst No. 2 in 2029, 2035, 2041 and 2047.

“U.S. Opens work so well here,” Davis said.

Other USGA championships do, too – and not just within Pinehurst. There’s a plethora of high-level venues to host them in the area, from Pine Needles to Southern Pines and even in the broader state of North Carolina.

At its heart, the USGA is a grassroots organization for golfers. In that sense, a Pinehurst presence serves its mission brilliantly. Roughly a million golfers travel through the Pinehurst area annually. A more permanent, visible presence from the USGA is a natural fit.

The USGA is currently based in Liberty Corner, New Jersey, and will maintain its presence there. That current headquarters gives the USGA proximity to major media in New York City and close access to broadcast partners NBC/Universal (which soon also will include Golf Channel) in Connecticut.

“The opportunity to have a base there remains really important to us,” Annis said.

The USGA’s museum and library, for one, will remain in Liberty Corner, but given the number of core golfers who travel through the Pinehurst area, there will also be a visitor center and museum experience at HQ2 which will allow putting artifacts on display for a different audience on a rotating basis.

The USGA has for years maintained a rented space in Pinehurst where roughly 15 employees are based. Many of them are involved in U.S. Open preparations. The establishment of a larger HQ2, which will be called Golf House Pinehurst, brings those roles in the fold but also will require an additional 35 roles, from various departments, to relocate to the Pinehurst office. Roughly 310 people are employed by the USGA overall.

“It’s a distributive strategy to allow us to get closer to our customers, core golfers, golf fans who we know come to Pinehurst on a regular basis but at the same time keep our roots also firmly planted in New Jersey,” Annis said.

The USGA has tentative plans to construct two buildings (two smaller structures fit the Pinehurst Village footprint better than a single colossal one) near the Pinehurst clubhouse and the Carolina Hotel. It puts them in close proximity to where the action is in Pinehurst.

Davis said the USGA expects to break ground in the spring of 2022. The end date for those buildings to be fully functional is December 21, 2023 – six months before Pinehurst No. 2 hosts its fourth U.S. Open in 2024.

The USGA will move its golf club test center to Pinehurst as well as other operations such as research, science and innovation; championship operations and various support operations.

“There’s no place like Pinehurst in the U.S., so that was the real starting point for us in terms of how do we accelerate our strategy to serve the game, champion and advance the game,” Annis said. “For so many reasons, Pinehurst just made perfect sense. That became the place where we started the conversation.”

Pinehurst and the USGA share a 125-year history, and those histories are intertwined. Pinehurst has continued to innovate – with the recently opened nine-hole short course, called The Cradle, being an excellent example of that – which allows the historic resort to attract newer, younger and more diverse people to the game. The USGA hopes to follow suit.

The state of North Carolina, of course, incentivized the move last week as House Bill 807 was unanimously approved. It allows for up to $42 million in performance-based state incentives to a “sports championship employer” heading to the Tar Heel State, but the USGA didn’t start out with that idea. State officials wanted the U.S. Open within state borders, wanted the USGA to have a permanent presence and wanted to support the organization’s growth strategy to get there.

“As we started to get deeper into the conversation, it was clear that the state was really focused on two things: research science and innovation and on growing the game within the state,” Annis said. “This is the home of American golf. They are keenly interested in continuing to grow the potential of golf within North Carolina.”

USGA’s first Anchor Site, Pinehurst No. 2 will host U.S. Opens

As USGA’s first Anchor Site, Pinehurst No. 2 will host U.S. Opens in 2024, 2029, 2035, 2041 and 2047

PINEHURST, N.C. – In an effort to expand its impact in golf and extend its mission to champion and advance the game, the USGA will establish “Golf House Pinehurst” in North Carolina, to include a new equipment-testing facility, innovation hub, museum/visitors center and office by 2023, and host five U.S. Open Championships in the golf-rich state by 2047.

The announcement adds four U.S. Open Championships to be contested the famed Pinehurst No. 2 course – in 2029, 2035, 2041 and 2047 – to the already scheduled 2024 event. The decision accelerates the USGA’s strategy to stage its premier golf championship at America’s most iconic venues with greater frequency. By doing so, Pinehurst Resort & Country Club will serve as the USGA’s first anchor site for the U.S. Open.

“There is no better place for the USGA to plant new roots than the Home of American Golf,” said Mike Davis, CEO of the USGA. “Thanks to the vision of North Carolina, Moore County and Pinehurst leaders, we are taking a bold step forward and forging a long-term commitment that will elevate our championships, foster greater innovation in golf, and ultimately help grow the game.”

The plan, conceived over the last several years, came to fruition through a comprehensive economic development effort that involved representatives from the North Carolina General Assembly, Moore County, the Village of Pinehurst and economic development experts.

“The USGA and Pinehurst Resort have a deep and storied history of partnering to foster the game of golf and crown its greatest champions,” said Bob Dedman, Jr., speaking on behalf of the Dedman family, which owns Pinehurst Resort. “We are honored to be selected as the U.S. Open’s first Anchor Site, an unprecedented distinction and testament to Pinehurst No. 2’s legacy and future as a championship test for the world’s greatest golfers.”

“While so much of the game’s history is rooted in timeless traditions, both the USGA and Pinehurst have embraced innovation in golf course architecture, agronomy, equipment design, player development and the rules of the game,” adds Dedman. “We’re excited to work with the USGA as they create leading edge equipment and training facilities to advance the game, as well as a new visitor center to link the past to the present and future.”

The total $25 million investment over the next several years includes the construction of two buildings to be located on the historic Pinehurst Resort property, housing 50 full-time staff members.

The campus will feature the USGA’s Equipment Standards Test Center – a laboratory dedicated to testing golf balls and clubs for conformance to the Rules of Golf. It will replace the current facility on the USGA’s Liberty Corner campus and enable significant new investment in advanced technology required to perform this global governance function.

Pinehurst will also serve as the USGA’s base for its work to advance the game of golf through innovation, research and science, in collaboration with some of the state’s leading universities.

A USGA Golf Museum experience will also be added, giving visitors a chance to delve into the association’s premier collection of golf artifacts and connect them more deeply with the game’s rich history.

Independent studies estimate that the total economic impact of the USGA’s long-term presence will exceed $2 billion to the state of North Carolina. More than 1 million visitors travel to Pinehurst annually.

“The USGA’s North Carolina history in golf is legendary, from Arnold Palmer to Webb Simpson, and we welcome this new chapter in golf history with the USGA’s new hub in Pinehurst,” said Governor Roy Cooper. “We welcome the USGA’s selection of our state for this significant new component of its operations and new jobs, and look forward to growing with the game across North Carolina.”

“The USGA’s plans for this significant new presence in Pinehurst elevates the Village’s reputation in the golf world and enhances North Carolina’s prestige as a destination for both businesses and tourists,” said Commerce Secretary Anthony Copeland. “Today’s news will add new energy to the leisure and hospitality services and significantly contribute to the long-term recovery of that important segment of our economy.”

Championship Commitment

In addition to four newly scheduled U.S. Opens, the USGA will bring its other premier championships to the state at an increased rate, including, but not limited to, the U.S. Women’s Open, U.S. Senior Open, U.S. Amateur, U.S. Women’s Amateur, U.S. Junior and U.S. Girls’ Junior.

Increased championship frequency will allow the USGA and Pinehurst to make future investments that will enhance the association’s ability to create a first-class player, corporate partner, fan, volunteer and media championship experience. The streamlining of operating costs due to the permanent presence will also allow the USGA to increase its annual investment in the game.

North Carolina has hosted 33 USGA championships since 1955, including last year’s U.S. Amateur Championship at Pinehurst Resort. The 2021 U.S. Junior Amateur Championship will be conducted at the Country Club of North Carolina in Pinehurst and the 2022 U.S. Women’s Open will be played at Pine Needles Lodge & Golf Club in nearby Southern Pines before the U.S. Open returns to Pinehurst No. 2 for its fourth playing in 2024.

Association Offices

Construction is expected to begin in Spring 2021. Formal design plans are not complete; however, the new buildings will be no more than two stories tall and reflect the aesthetic of the village and Pinehurst Resort.

USGA staffers based in Pinehurst will include members of the championship operations, Research and Test Center and Green Section teams. The number represents approximately 15 percent of the USGA’s current workforce and will include some of the game’s foremost scientific and golf management experts.

The administrative building in Pinehurst will feature educational exhibits and memorabilia from the USGA Golf Museum and Library in Liberty Corner, which serves as the primary repository of golf history and learning in the world.

The majority of USGA staff will continue to be based at the association’s main campus in New Jersey.

The Village of Pinehurst will be the site of yet another United States Golf Association championship in 2021.

The USGA announced Monday that the 74th U.S. Junior Amateur Championship will be played at The Country Club of North Carolina on July 19-24, 2021. It will be the third USGA event held at The Country Club of North Carolina, following the U.S. Girls’ Junior in 2010 and the 1980 U.S. Amateur captured by Hal Sutton.

“The Country Club of North Carolina is honored to host the 2021 U.S. Junior Amateur Championship and to be among the prestigious clubs to host this wonderful event,” club president Tom Beddow said in a press release issued by the USGA. “CCNC has a great history and tradition of supporting amateur golf and we have the experience, infrastructure and a committed staff and group of volunteers who will help make this a memorable championship.”

The Country Club of North Carolina features two courses, both of which will be utilized during the Junior Amateur. The Dogwood Course, designed by Ellis Maples and Willard Byrd, was renovated by Kris Spence in 2016. The Cardinal Course was designed by Byrd and Robert Trent Jones Jr., and was renovated by Arthur Hills from 1999-2002. The Dogwood Course will serve as the host site for both stroke play and match play, while the Cardinal Course will be the stroke-play co-host course for the 2021 Junior Amateur.

The 2021 U.S. Junior Amateur will be the 34th USGA championship conducted in North Carolina. Pinehurst will be the site of two major USGA events in 2019 with the U.S. Amateur being held at the Pinehurst Resort on August 12-19 and the U.S. Senior Women’s Open coming to the Pine Needles Lodge & Golf Club on May 16-19.

ABOUT

The 2021 Girls High School Golf National Invitational is headed back to historic Pinehurst Resort in Pinehurst, NC. This invite-only tournament field will be made up of the top high school golfers across the country competing at a place as timeless as the game itself.

Receiving an invitation to the National Invitational is quite an honor since only the best high school golf teams and individuals will receive invites based on state championship performance. The Invitational brings together a wide variety of golfers from nearly all 50 states. Public or private. Small or large. All high school state championship teams, individuals, and their families are welcome at the Invitational.

The Girls Invitational is a 3-day, 54 hole stroke play event including team and individual competition. Competition rounds will take place on Pinehurst No. 6, No. 8, and No. 9 courses.

QUALIFYING & TOURNAMENT SCORING

TEAM QUALIFYING PROCEDURES

The state champions in each division of every state will receive an invitation. In the event the state champions are not able to attend, the 2nd place team will be invited. State championship teams from all divisions have priority over 2nd place teams. Additional bids will be awarded to the top-ranked teams in the NHSGA rankings at the end of the 2020-2021 season based on availability.  In the event a state’s season and or state championship is canceled, we will revert to the most recent season’s champions for a respective state championship. Additionally, due to COVID-19’s cancelation of the 2020 spring season & effects to the fall 2021 state tournaments landscape – application based team & individual entry will be awarded based on merit.

Teams competing in the Invitational will compete representing their state, NOT their high school. For example, if East Longmeadow High School wins the Massachusetts Division 1 State Championship, they will compete as Massachusetts (ELH) at the Invitational versus playing as ELHS Spartans. Since some teams are unable to get sponsorship from their state or their school, this system allows any team to compete without restriction.

INDIVIDUAL QUALIFYING PROCEDURES

The State championship medalists (1st place individuals) will receive an invitation. In the event that the medalist is on the state championship team, the top finishing individual not on the champion team will be invited. State championship medalists from all divisions have priority over non-medalists.  In the event that the medalist cannot attend, the runner-up will be invited. Additional bids may be awarded to the top-ranked individuals in the NHSGA rankings at the end of the 2020-2021 season based on availability. In the event a state’s season and or state championship is canceled, we will revert to the most recent season’s medalist for a respective state championship.

TOURNAMENT SCORING AND RECOGNITION

The Girls Invitational is a 3-day, 54-hole stroke play event including team and individual competition. Teams will be allowed to bring 5 players and we will take the top 4 scores for each day as the “team score”. In the event that a team only brings 4 players, all 4 scores will be counted toward the “team score”.

The World Amatuer Golf Rankings will recognize the Invitational – WAGR coverage includes more than 10,000 players from 102 countries, and more than 4,000 ranking tournaments played in 104 countries.

AJGA PBE Logo

The National Invitational will be recognized by the Junior Golf Scoreboard (JGS). The Junior Golf Scoreboard typically receives results for over 2,100 tournaments worldwide and ranks approximately 10,000 – 11,000 players at any one time. The JGS is the foremost used junior golf ranking system by varsity college golf coaches since 1998.

AJGA PBE Logo

AJGA PBE points will be awarded to the top finishers for both the Boys & Girls Invitational.

THE COURSES

PINEHURST NO. 6

https://youtube.com/watch?v=ljmbnWTh7cU%3Fversion%3D3%26rel%3D1%26fs%3D1%26autohide%3D2%26showsearch%3D0%26showinfo%3D1%26iv_load_policy%3D1%26wmode%3Dtransparent

No. 6 is a departure from other Pinehurst courses in both design and temperament. Designed by Tom Fazio with the help of his uncle George, and provides one of the tougher challenges that Pinehurst has to offer. This course provides many more tree-lined fairways and has significantly less bunkers and waste areas than courses No. 2, No. 4, or No. 8.

PINEHURST NO. 8

https://youtube.com/watch?v=tYnhr4pp-7M%3Fversion%3D3%26rel%3D1%26fs%3D1%26autohide%3D2%26showsearch%3D0%26showinfo%3D1%26iv_load_policy%3D1%26wmode%3Dtransparent

Pinehurst No. 8 finds itself on North Carolina’s Top Golf Courses on almost every list you can find. Designed by Tom Fazio, the course is a nod at Pinehurst No. 2 with some added elements. Natural wetlands, rolling terrain, and incredible variety between holes makes this course one of the most complete on Pinehurst’s property.

PINEHURST NO. 9

Jack Nicklaus constructed a masterpiece set amidst the longleaf pines. An intriguingly well-balanced course which, according to Golf Digest, “has come to enhance even the lofty Sandhills image for world-class golf amenities.”

THE CRADLE – SHORT COURSE

Pinehurst’s Cradle (Short Course) is a 9-hole track located right at the Resort’s main complex. National Invitational players will have the option to play the Cradle on prior to championship rounds. Don’t miss out on playing what The Golf Channel called “the most fun 10 acres in all of golf”.
